Technical Cooperation participates in a meeting of the Council for Monitoring the Project Environmental Assets of Cova Eirós, Spain

On May 8, 2018, a meeting of the Environmental Accompaniment Council of Cova Eirós, in Lugo, Spain, was held at the Enxeñaria Higher Polytechnic School, where the various studies carried out so far were presented to discuss the importance of conservation of the Cova Eirós, and made compromises regarding the recovery of the cavity ceiling. In addition, the elaboration of the Sustainable Territorial Management Plan – PGTS of the area was established, and with this, work began on surveying the environmental assets of the region.

The Monitoring Council of the Environmental Assets Program is formed by several Galician entities: ADEGA – Galician Ecological Defense Association, Council of Galician Culture, IBADER – Institute of Agrarian Biodiversity and Rural Development, University of Santiago, among others, besides the Cosmos and members of the Technical Cooperation.

The implantation of the Environmental Assets Program in the region of Cova Eirós, located in the Triacastela mine, arises from the rich archaeological – traces of Cro-magnon, cave paintings, traces of Neanderthals – and paleontological content – skeletons and marks of extinct fossil bear) of the cave, in spite of its small dimensions.

During several years there was an intense conflict between the mining exploration and the fight for the conservation of this cavity. In 2016, after the manifestation of the ADEGA, the SBE – VC – RBMA Technical Cooperation began to operate in the region, aiming at resolving the conflict established, preserving Cova Eirós and contributing to the greater sustainability of the activities.
